1. What New World Screwworm is — and why it’s different

New World Screwworm is the larval stage of the fly Cochliomyia hominivorax. The name comes from the way the maggots burrow — screwing themselves deeper into tissue as they feed. A single female can lay 200–300 eggs at a time and several thousand over her short life, and she’s drawn to even tiny wounds.

Here’s the life cycle in brief, because understanding it is what makes early detection possible:

  1. Eggs. The female lays a cluster of eggs at the edge of a fresh wound or a natural opening — navel, eyes, nose, ears, genitalia.
  2. Larvae feed. Within hours the eggs hatch and the larvae begin feeding on living tissue, burrowing inward. This is where the damage happens, and it happens fast.
  3. Larvae drop. After roughly a week of feeding, mature larvae drop from the wound to the ground.
  4. Pupae & adults. They burrow into the soil, pupate, and emerge as adult flies — ready to find the next wound and start the cycle again.

That cycle is why an outbreak can escalate quickly across a region, and why catching cases at the egg-and-early-larvae stage matters so much.

2. Why early detection is so hard

This is the uncomfortable truth that even official guidance acknowledges: an early infestation is nearly invisible. In the first one to three days, the larvae are below the surface, feeding inside what may look like a small, ordinary opening in the skin. They usually aren’t seen crawling on the surface, and a wound the size of a tick bite can hide a surprising number of them.

So the standard advice — “inspect your herd closely” — is correct but incomplete. You can do everything right and still miss the critical early window, simply because there’s little to see yet. That gap between “infestation has started” and “infestation is visible” is the central problem in screwworm management, and it’s the reason a wound-by-wound visual check alone isn’t a complete defense.

By the time an infestation is obvious, it’s already advanced. Effective screwworm readiness means looking for the fly in the environment — not just waiting for visible damage on the animal.

4. When and where to inspect your herd

Because the fly targets fresh wounds, your inspection schedule should follow anything that breaks the skin. Check daily for the first 5–7 days after any of these, especially during warm fly-active months:

Reduce the opportunity

In or near an affected zone, USDA guidance suggests postponing elective wound-creating procedures (dehorning, branding, castration) when you can, treating newborn navels promptly, and keeping pens and equipment free of sharp objects that cause cuts. Fewer fresh wounds means fewer targets for the fly.

5. The detection window: why timing is everything

Think of every case as moving through three stages. Your goal is to catch it as far to the left as possible — because cost, animal suffering, and spread all rise sharply as you move right.
